Lake Superior / Tahquamenon Falls / Munising

09/20/08 - 09/26/08

I spent a week getting from my fishing spot to the area where my photography workshop will be. For the first few days, I drove in Ontario along the north shore of Lake Superior. I spent a couple of nights in Provincial Park campgrounds that were right on the lake. I had excellent views of the lake from my campsite. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't the best. So I ending up spending more time waiting out some rainstorms than I would've prefered. The first three photos are from these parks.

Once I got back in the U.S., I spent a night in a campground in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. My campsite was less than 100 feet from the St. Mary's River, which is the river that connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron. From my campsite, I had a clear, unobstructed view of the river and the huge cargo ships that travel it. The next two photos are of ships that passed while I was there. In the second photo, look at the smaller boats near the ship to get an idea of how big it is.

My next stop was Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan. The park has two sets of waterfalls. The upper falls are one of the biggest falls east of the Mississippi. They are over 200 feet wide with a drop of nearly 50 feet. The lower falls are a set of five smaller falls cascading around an island in the river. It was here that I first started seeing some really nice fall colors. The next seven photos are from here.

My last stop is the Munising, Michigan area. This is where my photography workshop will be based next week. I visited a couple of local waterfalls and spent part of a day in Pictured Rocks National Seashore. While visiting Pictured Rocks, I ran into the trip leader for my workshop. So we went out for a short shoot at a lake in the Hiawatha National Forest on the morning before the workshop started. The remaining six photos are from these spots.
