Koreshan State Historic Site

02/16/09 - 03/01/09

Koreshan State Historic Site preserves the Koreshan Unity Settlement. The settlement was built in the late 1890s by Dr. Cyrus Teed and his followers. Teed hoped to build his "New Jerusalem" where people could come to practice his new religon. One interesting belief of this religious group is that the world was hollow and that we are living on the inside surface of the earth.

Although Teed thought he was immortal, he died in 1908 at the age of 69. His followers kept him in a bathtub waiting for him to resurrect. But the county finally forced them to bury him after five days. After he died, membership began to decline. In 1961, the property was deeded to the state by the last four remaining members.
