Northern Maine

07/26/09 - 08/06/09

After a week of rain at Acadia, I headed further north up the coast. Unfortunately, it didn't get me out of the rain. It rained for the first five days I was here, which made for 12 consecutive days of rain. So my hiking possibilities were limited. The trails I did hike were more streams and bogs than they were trails. When I finally did get my first day of nice weather, a leaking tire value sent me to the garage instead of the great outdoors.

One place close to where I was camping was Quoddy Head State Park, which is the easternmost point in the U.S. I made a couple of visits, one in fog and one when the weather was clear. I hiked all the trails in the park and ended up with muddy shoes and wet feet.

I also took a moose photo tour one afternoon. We saw two moose, but the one close encounter was after sunset. So it was too dark to take photos. We traveled along the West Branch of the Penobscot River and got several views of Mount Katahdin, which is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail.
