Wheeler Lakes

07/10/11

The Wheeler Lakes area is in the White River National Forest. It is a little over an hour west of Denver, near the Copper Mountain Ski Resort. The trail starts at an elevation of 9800 feet and climbs to the lakes, which are at 11,100 feet. The trail was a little steep in some spots and a little muddy in other spots. But it was a good trail to get me more acclimated to the higher elevations.

I joined the Phillips family for a hike to the lakes. Alecia led the way and set a pace that was almost perfect for me. Although, some of the steeper spots on the trail got me breathing pretty hard. We had a good time exploring the lakes and a small waterfall.

We got rained on a bit on the way back down. But I'm getting used to that when I hike with the Phillips. I think we could hit the road as rainmakers. Got a drought? Call us and we'll plan a hike in your area. However, we've been known to produce sleet and hail (e.g. see previous photo set from Mount Evans), so use us at your own risk.
