Wabaskang Lake, Ontario

08/21/12 - 08/24/12

I spent four days on Wabaskang Lake. The purpose of my visit was two-fold. First, I wanted to visit some friends Tom and Helen. They were the camp managers for a couple of years at Thaddeus Lake Lodge where I fish every year. Second, I wanted to check out the camp next to their cabin, Sleepy Dog Cabins. Tom and Helen had been saying a lot of good things about the camp and the owner, so I wanted to give it a try.

While I didn't do that well fishing, I still had a great time. There was a lot of wildlife around and much of it seemed less skittish than I've experienced elsewhere. I got to watch a pair of loons feeding their chick. I also witnessed an interesting interaction with a couple of eagles and a turkey vulture. The vulture was sitting in a tree and an immature bald eagle flew in and started chasing it. Suddenly, a mature bald eagle swooped in, talons first, on the immature eagle. After a momentary sparring match, everyone went their separate ways. I got a few photos of the event, including the two eagles sparring. Unfortunately, the feathers of the far wing of the mature eagle ended up being in such a position that the eagle looks more like a mutant duck. You can check it out for yourself below.

I'd like to thank Tom and Helen for their hospitality, showing me around the lake, and feeding me a great walleye meal. I'd also like to thank Tom Williams, the owner of Sleepy Dog Cabins. Tom, I throughly enjoyed the talk that we and Margaret had Saturday morning. Also, thanks for the copy of the book your mother wrote. It was very interesting and very entertaining.

I stayed in my RV while at Sleepy Dog, but Margaret took me on a tour of some of their cabins before I left. Their cabins are the best by far that I've seen in my 30 years of Canadian fishing trips. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for someplace to go. I've heard that there's good fishing on Wabaskang Lake, but I didn't experience it this trip. But I definitely plan to go back and try fishing the lake again.
