Florida Birds Photography Workshop - Birds Fishing

03/02/14 - 03/07/14

I took a six day photography workshop from Don Mamosser Photography. The workshop focused mainly on the birds of Florida. We visited Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Venice Rookery, the Shark Valley region of the Everglades National Park, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and several other spots. I'd like to thank Don and Anya for organizing a fun workshop. I'd also like to thank the other participants of the workshop for their inspiration through their awesome photos.

I've decided to break up the photos from this workshop into three web pages. This first page contains photos of birds fishing, catching fish, and eating fish.

I spent a lot of time watching the various birds trying to catch fish. Many of the birds stand very still and ambush any fish that get too close. But, it was interesting to see the different fishing techniques some of the birds use. Two birds I found very interesting are the Snowy Egret and the Tri-colored Heron. They like to fly out over the water and grab a minnow from the water while in flight. Another interesting technique is used by the Reddish Egret. It dashes around in the water with it's wings spread while searching for fish. Anhingas and Cormorants swim underwater to catch their fish. It's amazimng how big a fish they can fit down their throats. Anhingas are fun to watch when they catch a small minnow. They surface, throw the minnow into the air, catch it in their mouth, and then swallow it. It was a lot of fun watching the various birds find their food.
