Casey, IL - Big Things in a Small Town

10/18/16

My sister and I took a day trip to Casey, Illinois. The town's motto is Big Things in a Small Town. A local businessman started building big things and there are now seven things in the town that have been declared to be the biggest of its type in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. They include the world's largest rocking chair, wind chimes, mailbox, golf tee, pitchfork, knitting needles, and wooden shoes. There also are a few oher big things in town that aren't record holders, including a pencil, birdcage, ruler, and ear of corn.

For the items to be considered as the largest of its type, it must be functional. So, for example, a lady actually had to knit something with the knitting needles before the Guinness people would recognize them. Also, the mailbox is set up so that if you drop a post card into a slot in it, the flag raises.

If you're ever driving on I-70 in eastern Illinos, I recommend an hour or two stopover in the town to check it out.
